MALAYSIA’S CONSISTENT PURSUANCE FOR PEACE

1. Malaysia is ranked 18th most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index (GPI), out of 163 countries.

2. Occupying the spot within the Top-20 most peaceful sovereign state per the annual index of the Institute for Economics and Peace betters Malaysia’s own performance from its 23rd ranking in 2021.

3. Despite the tension over the years, Malaysia’s foreign policy practices and cooperation with other countries are seeing better days.

4. The evaluation is made based on a total of 23 indicators, under several categories. Malaysia’s involvement in its domestic and international conflicts; domestic harmony discords; and areas such as crime rates, non-state actors activities, and political stability are measured.

5. Malaysia ranks ahead of larger states such as the United Kingdom (34), China (89), and the United States of America (129).

6. With Malaysia known to have multi-cultural and religious components in its community, Malaysians should be proud to be recognized as a peaceful nation.

7. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri have been consistent in representing Malaysia’s message of peace. In August 2022, he voiced Malaysia’s stand regarding the fate of Palestinians to United States President Joe Biden during his visit to the U.S.

8. In September 2022, he expressed Malaysia’s stand at the 7th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) to focus on peace, and acceptance of multipolarity towards peace and regional prosperity.

9. Recently, Ismail Sabri laments the lack of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) action on Myanmar crisis, dubbing it as a ‘very saddening’ situation and called upon the Security Council to take serious action.

10. Ismail Sabri had also raised the point to abolish veto power of the United Nations Security Council, in line with the principle of one-country-one-vote- whilst donning a traditional baju Melayu, delivering Malaysia’s statement in Bahasa Melayu.

11. The clear voice on where Malaysia stand on peace not just for the region, but for the world is clear, especially with the consistency of the message brought forward by the Prime Minister on a global event such as the UNGA which is being attended by more than 150 world leaders.
