PRIME MINISTER’S FOCUS : SAVING MALAYSIAN LIVES AND WELL-BEING TAKES PRIORITY ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE
1. The December 2021 flood is still fresh in some of our minds, and those moments are likely to stay with us, Malaysians for a while. This was considered as the first serious crisis apart from the Covid-19 pandemic for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri.
2. That moment became the benchmark, and the Malaysian cabinet led by Ismail Sabri began to place priority on flood mitagation plans in the country.
3. When the news started brewing recently that the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) are expecting Malaysia to have more floods due to higher rainfall around the end of the year, Ismail Sabri had already begun his plans to implement flood mitigation projects in states such as Selangor, and Kedah, to name a few. The plans taken by Ismail Sabri was months prior to the forecast.
4. For example, the Second Rolling Plan 2022 under the 12th Malaysia Plan has seen Ismail Sabri approving RM 6.3 billion worth of implementation for infrastructure development and services across several facilities in Selangor.
5. Malaysians have also seen the priorities by the government to be reflected by its relevant agencies- with National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) issuing Public Service Announcement regarding flood mitigation planning; and MetMalaysia establishing grounds that predictions for flood could be made within 1-3 days, therefore, placing the safety of Malaysians on top of the priority list above all else.
6. Ismail Sabri's effort to establish firmer flood mitigation plans would also see the government building more sabo structures which could reduce the risk of debris floods in states such as Kedah, and Pahang.
7. Ismail Sabri has gone further by working on other separated proposals such as the Water Sector Transformation (WST) 2040 Plan, working with National Water Research Institute of Malaysia Water Quality Laboratory to be the centre for water pollution incidents in the future. On top of this, plans are currently being carried out by Malaysian Institute of Chemistry and the Malaysian Council of Food Analysts over water pollution researches.
8. Centralizing under the Prime Minister, state governments, NADMA, MetMalaysia, Malaysia Water Quality Lab, Malaysian Institute of Chemistry- are all working together for the sake of Malaysians' safety and well-being.
9. Malaysians can also look forward towards the outcome for a flood hazard map, which would show the 'bluespots' or high flood probability areas based on current and future use of the area. The Prime Minister is living up to the expectations of the ethos that is 'Keluarga Malaysia' by garnering all necessary knowledge and skill workers with the intent of placing Malaysian lives and well-being as his main priority above everything else.
